BEYOND5

The world is constantly changing, with advanced technologies such as rapidly evolving radio frequency electronics and the Internet of Things (IoT). To remain competitive, to secure sustainability, development and social welfare, Europe needs to be ready to implement its own strategy. For this purpose, the BEYOND5 Project financed by the European Union is being implemented. Project BEYOND5 aims to add connectivity and functionality features to existing CMOS technology by presenting Europe's first industrial roadmaps.

The BEYOND5 Project aims to create a complete European supply chain in the field of RF electronics. New RF fields for sensing, communication, 5G radio infrastructure and beyond will be enabled by bringing together key European actors from the entire value chain, from materials to systems. The project outputs will form the basis for a high-scale integration that will enable the production of reliable and environmentally friendly components, reduce power consumption and reduce costs.

The overarching goal of BEYOND5 is to create a European supply chain for all requirements for Radio Frequency Electronics enabling new RF domains for sensing, communications, 5G radio infrastructure and beyond. It is a technology project that brings together the most important actors in Europe, covering the entire value chain from materials to semiconductor technologies, from designs to components and systems.

Within the scope of the BEYOND5 Project, TUBITAK BILGEM, FORD, TURKCELL, Marmara University and BUYUTECH from Turkey and 41 stakeholders from 10 different countries in total are carrying out studies. These stakeholders include 11 SMEs, 4 ATO (Research and Technology Organization) and 11 universities.

There are 3 main workflows in the BEYOND5 Project:

  1. Technology development in three European industrial pilot lines:
  • 300mm RF SOI substrate pilot line at Soitec, supported by the “Substrate Innovation Center” at CEA LETI to prepare the next generation,
  • RF-SOI 65 nm pilot line for 5G FEM in ST addressing both sub-6 GHz and 28 GHz domains,
  • 22FDX pilot line that addresses the Digital Signal Processing and RF reliability of the radio module in the GF.
  1. Strengthening the European RF design ecosystem based on a large untold community using FD-SOI and RF-SOI platforms
  2. Six pioneering systems that bring the value chain together to demonstrate the added value of technology at the user level:
  • NB IoT for Smart Asset Tracking,
  • Contactless USB for high data rate communication,
  • V2X for autonomous connected trucks,
  • 5G Low Power Digital Beamforming Base Station for indoor dense areas,
  • Automotive MIMO Radar with embedded artificial intelligence,
  • Car Interior Radar for passenger monitoring.

TÜBİTAK BİLGEM is participating in the V2X demonstration for autonomous connected trucks within the BEYOND5 Project. In this demonstration, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM will work with BUYUTECH (excavator provider) and FORD (truck provider) to realize the construction site demonstration. TÜBİTAK BİLGEM aims to enable the autonomous truck and excavator to work collaboratively by developing an artificial intelligence-based high-level task and route planner module that includes sensor fusion and mapping module.
